Maryland Developmental Disabilities - Employment First Initiative Conference had representatives from many Maryland agencies including state government, provider groups around Maryland, as well as families and self advocates.   The Conference was completely full which shows the interest in this topic.

The key note speaker was

Allan Bergman, President and CEO
HIGH IMPACT Mission-Based Consulting
aibergman@comcast.net

Allan's Employment First Imperative:
All people, regardless of severity of their disabilities,  are entitled to integrated employment with the correct job
match and appropriate supports.

Allan was brought in to train Marylanders regarding the Employment First Initiative and hopefully provide the insight for changing the approach to employment programs for individuals with I/DD Disabilities.

Allan discusses Federal Vocational Policies as well  the disparities of their implementation throughout the country.  He addresses what has failed as well as what is working.   And describes how costly it is for the states and the US to continue on the same path with regard to limited employment options for those with disabilities.    Currently over 42% of those with cognitive disabilities while 15% of the general population are living below the poverty line.    This is costly to our country and to the states as it results in growing costs of Medicaid,  SSI, SSDI and other supplemental services.

Maryland Employment Summit Attachments Part I and Part 2 discuss The Employment Initiative across the country and what needs to be done to
address the issues of Employment for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities..

Attached is an another document Employment First Summit Free Apps, which was a session on free mobile phone apps. Presenters focused on useful job productivity tools on IPhone and ITouch that have proven useful for some adults with I/DD disabilities.
